The Rietveld Chair a study in Color

The Red-Bleu Rietveld chair was designed between 1918 and 1920, and is still an icon of modern interior design.

Gerrit Th. Rietveld build his own furniture from cheap materials and simple designs, the prototype of his famous chair came to life in 1918.
As you can imagine, it was rather a controversial design.

Rietveld went back to the basics functions a chair should do, sitting, leaning en supporting…
His studie of these elements in his prototype was the basic ground for "De Stijl" movement membership.

The color settings as we know it today came about in 1919 along with the removal of to sided panels to make the chair "lighter".
The primary colors were used to reflect the colors of the avant garde setting of  "De Stijl"
